In May 1985, the Tamil Nadu government passed a special act that established Alagappa University in Karaikudi. On campus, the university comprises 44 departments, 9 centers, and 2 constituent colleges. In the Sivaganga and Ramanathapuram districts, there are 46 affiliated colleges. The Indian University Grants Commission (UGC) has approved Alagappa University. According to the QS World Ranking 2023, the university is now rated 51st out of all South Asian universities.
