The National Testing Agency (NTA) released the revised final answer keys for NEET 2024 on July 26, 2024, following a Supreme Court order. Initially, the final answer key stated that two options were correct for a particular Physics question. However, after review, only option number 4 was considered correct.

During the Supreme Court hearing on various NEET 2024 petitions, the IIT Delhi Committee analyzed the disputed Physics question. The committee concluded that the two options were mutually exclusive and confirmed that only option 4 was correct. Based on this decision, the court suggested removing the bonus marks, awarding four marks only to candidates who chose option 4, and applying negative marking to other responses.

After the Supreme Court’s decision, the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) released the NEET 2024 counselling schedule. The process began on August 14, 2024. The Round 1 seat allotment result was announced on August 25, and candidates reported to institutes between August 25 and August 31. Round 2 took place from September 5 to September 27, while Round 3 was held from October 3 to October 19. The Online Stray Vacancy round occurred from October 22 to November 5, followed by the Special Stray Vacancy round from November 20 to November 30. MCC conducted Special Stray Vacancy Round 2 from December 9 to December 16, 2024.

NTA released the final answer keys for the NEET 2024 re-exam on June 30, 2024, before declaring the results. These keys covered four question paper sets (A, B, C, and D) and their six subsets, with no changes from the provisional versions.

The provisional answer keys and OMR sheets for the NEET 2024 retest were published on June 28, 2024. Candidates had until June 29 at 11 PM to submit challenges. Each challenge required a fee of INR 200, payable through credit/debit cards or net banking. Unlike the original exam, coaching institutes did not release unofficial answer keys for the re-test.

Due to inconsistencies in the scoring system, particularly the grace mark system, NTA re-conducted the exam on June 23, 2024, for 1,563 candidates who had received grace marks. The revised results were announced on July 1, 2024.

The final answer keys for all NEET 2024 sets were released on June 4, 2024, along with the exam results. Top coaching institutes had earlier released unofficial answer keys after the original exam on May 5, 2024. The official provisional answer keys and OMR sheets were made available on May 30, with the challenge deadline extended from May 31 at 11:50 PM to June 1 at 11 AM.

For NEET 2025, NTA announced the exam date on February 7, 2025. The exam will take place on May 4, 2025, in offline mode (paper-pencil-based) in a single session. The provisional answer key will be released in the fourth week of May 2025, with candidates given three to four days to raise objections. The final answer key and NEET 2025 results will be declared on or before June 14, 2025.

This article goes a step further and explains the marking scheme used when the mentioned challenges are valid under the National Testing Agency (NTA).

Marking Scheme Overview

When the NTA's expert committee reviews and accepts a candidate's challenge to an answer key, the following rules apply:

  1. Correct Answer or Most Appropriate Answer: If the candidate answers according to the new key, four marks (+4) are given to the candidate.
  2. Incorrect Option Marked: If the candidate gives the wrong answer, the score gets decreased by one, (-1).
  3. Unanswered: No marks are given or shaved off for the unanswered questions (0 marks).
  4. Multiple Correct Options: In case more than one option is considered right, four marks (+4) are given to the candidate who chose any of the right options out of them.
  5. All Options Correct: If all the choices for a question are right, four marks (+4) are given to all the students who attempted the question.
  6. None Correct or Question Dropped: It implies that when a question does not have any lawful answer or is considered invalid to give out, four marks (+ 4) are given to every contestant, whether they tried it or not.
  7. Consistency with Provided Constants: Job seekers are encouraged to check that all the calculated numerical values are consistent with those constants that may have been presented in the questions.

These rules are meant to be fair and accurate in the scoring of the exams with a possibility of confusion or mistakes in the answer keys.
