Indian Institute of Technology, IIT BHU Varanasi was established in 1919. It was founded as Banaras Engineering College but later in 2012, it was designated as IIT BHU. This Institute secures a 531st rank by QS World University ranking in 2025. This Institute is approved by UGC and the All India Council for Technical Education. IIT BHU, located in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, is a prestigious public technological university in India. As per the 2024 QS World University Rankings, IIT BHU holds the 526th position among 1498 institutions globally. In the 2023 NIRF rankings, it was placed 31st overall and 15th in the engineering category. Originally established in 1919 as Banaras Engineering College, it was renamed the Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University (IIT-BHU) in 2012.
One of India's earliest engineering institutions, IIT BHU pioneered the development of fields such as mechanical, electrical, ceramic, and pharmaceutical engineering. The campus spans 1,300 acres, making it a prominent educational hub in the region.
Currently, IIT BHU boasts a student body of 6,495 undergraduates, 913 postgraduates, and 1,068 research scholars. The institute offers a diverse range of programs across 15 departments and three interdisciplinary schools. The B.Tech program, particularly popular at IIT BHU, requires candidates to secure a valid JEE Advanced rank and participate in JoSAA counselling for admission.
The tuition fee for the B.Tech program is INR 1,00,000 per semester. The cut-off for the B.Tech CSE program for general category candidates in 2024 ranged between 1621 and 2304. In addition to B.Tech, IIT BHU offers BPharm, BArch, MTech, MPharm, MSc, PhD, Integrated MTech (IMD), and Integrated Dual Degree (IDD) programs.
Regarding placements, IIT BHU has seen remarkable success, with the highest salary package offered during the 2024 placement season reaching INR 1.68 crore per annum on the very first day. A total of 1,044 job offers were made during the 2024 placements, and 310 pre-placement offers (PPOs) were extended to students. Leading global companies such as Qualcomm, Uber, Goldman Sachs, and Google were among the top recruiters for the batch of 2024.
